What does this setting do?

A password turns a public server into a private one. It is the sharpest access switch SCUM has, and it applies instantly to everyone — including regulars who do not know it yet.

For permanently closed groups a whitelist is the better tool, because it admits individual players instead of relying on a shared secret that gets passed around anyway. A password mostly pays off temporarily: while setting up, while testing, or while dealing with troublemakers.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

Empty, unless the server is deliberately private.

Classic PvP

Empty.

Hardcore

Empty.

What to watch out for

It locks out your own people too

A password set on the spur of the moment hits the regulars first. Announce it in your Discord, or everyone is left outside.

A private server does not grow

With a password the server still appears in the list but cannot be entered. New players then only arrive by invitation — the opposite of what you want while building up.
