How close enemies may appear

Minimum and maximum distance at which enemies appear – separately for first appearance and for reinforcements.

Handle with care

What does this setting do?

Enemies do not appear at a fixed point but somewhere between a minimum and a maximum distance from the player. These eight values override that span – separately for the first appearance of an encounter and for reinforcements into a running one, and separately by area.

The minimum distance is the more important of the two. It stops anyone appearing within sight – the thing players describe as coming “out of nowhere” and experience as a bug. If you get complaints of that kind, raise this value before changing anything else.

The maximum distance works the other way. Set high, enemies come from far off and you see them coming; set low, everything concentrates close to the player. A high value costs time before the enemies actually arrive – and anyone who has moved on never meets them.

All eight values ship as -1, meaning “game default”. The low threat zone values are capped at 0 to 1000 and 0 to 1100 respectively; the figures are in metres.

Two warnings from the developer description are meant seriously: the values apply to all encounters in that area, not to individual ones. And the minimum must not exceed the maximum – otherwise the span is empty and the result is unpredictable.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

Raise the minimum, leave the maximum at default. Nobody should watch enemies appear.

Classic PvP

-1 (game default). The defaults are well judged.

Hardcore

Lower the minimum so enemies show up closer – but never far enough to see them pop in.

What to watch out for

Minimum never above maximum

An inverted span produces no sensible result. Always set both values of an area together.

It applies to every encounter in the area

The developer description warns explicitly. There is no way to exempt individual locations.

-1 is not a zero

The default means “use the game's value”. For a distance you can rely on, write it out explicitly.
