What does this setting do?

With this on, the lockers and cabinets in buildings are locked and have to be opened — with tools, a key or force. Off means they stand open.

This is one of the few switches that directly decides the worth of skills. Locked containers make thievery and breaching tools useful and create time pressure: picking a lock keeps you busy and noisy. Open containers make looting faster and more accessible for newcomers but devalue the entire mechanic around it.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

Off, if beginners should make quick progress.

Classic PvP

On (default). Time pressure while opening is part of the game.

Hardcore

On.

What to watch out for

The best containers are the locked ones

Locked compartments generally hold more. Unlock them and the most rewarding loot on the server suddenly becomes free — the effect on supply is bigger than the switch suggests.
