What does this setting do?
Applies to offline protection and flag-specific protection. With this on, the server records which base was protected when, and when the protection lapsed.
Day to day you do not need this — for settling disputes you do. The classic complaint is "my base was protected and got raided anyway", and without a log it is one claim against another. With a log the question is answered in two minutes.

Logs grow
On busy servers many entries pile up daily. Regular log housekeeping is part of the deal, or the disk fills up.
