What does this setting do?

SCUM keeps animals in two states: fully simulated and purely virtual. Only the fully simulated ones actually roam, feed, flee and can be hunted — the virtual ones are entries in a list that become real animals when needed. This number caps only the first kind; the virtual population may be larger.

The value is therefore a performance control rather than a balance tool: it sets how much processing time wildlife may consume at most. The default of 500 suits most servers.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

500 to 800 if your server has headroom.

Classic PvP

500 (default).

Hardcore

500.

What to watch out for

Too low makes animals vanish

Once the budget is used up, no new animals appear near players even with density set high. If people complain about missing wildlife, look here first.
