What does this setting do?

Normally an enemy has to notice the player first: hear, see, search. This value sets what share instead knows from the outset where the player is and heads straight for them. It is given in percent, the range is 0 to 100, and the default -1 stands for the game's own value.

This is one of the most effective values for tension – and one of the most quickly overdone. At 100, every newly appearing group runs straight at the player. That is not hard in the sense of demanding but unfair in the sense of unavoidable: stealth, cover and noise lose their point because they change nothing about the outcome.

Conversely, a value of 0 makes the island considerably quieter. All enemies start unaware, and moving quietly gets you past almost anyone. For PvE servers built around exploration that is a good choice.

A moderate share between 10 and 30 is the most interesting range: usually you get to choose how to proceed, but you can never fully rely on it.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

0 to 10. Stealth should pay off.

Classic PvP

-1 (game default).

Hardcore

50 to 100. Show up and you are seen.

What to watch out for

High values devalue stealth

If enemies know where you are anyway, cover and noise achieve nothing. Players experience that as unfair, not as difficult.

-1 is not 0

The default means “game default”. To be sure nobody starts forewarned, enter 0.
