What does this setting do?

New players arrive on an island where everyone else has been equipping themselves for weeks. New player protection gives them a grace period during which other players cannot attack them. It is on by default.

This switch only decides whether. How long the protection lasts lives in its own setting – if you find the protection too short or too long, change it there, not here.

For servers that want to grow it is one of the most effective settings there is. The most common experience driving new players off a SCUM server is being shot three times in the first twenty minutes. This is exactly what prevents that.

The protection works both ways: whoever has it cannot attack either. So it cannot be abused, but it does require players to know they have it – a line in the welcome message helps more than any forum explanation.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

On. Costs nothing, helps every newcomer.

Classic PvP

On. Without it a PvP server loses every second new arrival.

Hardcore

Off, if your server deliberately shows no consideration.

What to watch out for

The duration lives elsewhere

This switch only knows on and off. How long protection lasts is governed by the matching duration setting.

The protected cannot attack

Protection works in both directions. New players who want to fight have to let it expire first.
