What does this setting do?

The higher the value, the blacker the night. 0 is the brightest setting, where you can still make things out without a light source; 1 is total darkness where nothing works without a flashlight, torch or night vision.

Contrary to what many expect, a freshly generated file contains 0 — SCUM ships the bright variant. Anyone who wants the atmospheric, pitch-black night has to raise the value themselves.

In practice this value decides whether night vision is a luxury or basic equipment. From roughly 0.6 upwards a light becomes mandatory — and therefore a giveaway, because any light source is visible from far away. For PvP servers that is precisely the appeal.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

0 to 0.3. Nobody is held back by missing equipment.

Classic PvP

0.5 to 0.7. Light becomes a choice between seeing and being seen.

Hardcore

0.9 to 1.0. Without preparation the night ends in a standstill.

What to watch out for

Monitors differ

What is still visible on your screen is already black for someone else. Ask in chat or on Discord after a change instead of trusting your own impression.

Together with fog it quickly gets too much

Fog and high darkness together remove nearly all visibility. Change one of the two, not both at once.
