Allow the map screen

The overlay map with your own position. Without it, orientation in the terrain counts.

What does this setting do?

The map screen shows the island and – this is the real point – your own position on it. It is allowed by default.

Turning it off changes not just a display but a whole way of playing. Without it you have to navigate by roads, coastlines, hills and place names, and the paper map in your backpack becomes an item you genuinely need. On servers that want exploration and meeting up to be part of the content, this is a very effective switch.

It is also one of the harshest for newcomers. The island covers some fifteen square kilometres; without knowing it, you walk in circles without a map. If you turn it off, announce it in your description – and ideally name a few landmarks.

A good middle road is to leave it on and economise on the life indicators instead. Orientation then stays easy while the feel still gets rougher.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

On. Without a map, new players get lost on a very large island.

Classic PvP

On. The tension comes from other players, not from getting lost.

Hardcore

Off. Compass and paper map become required equipment.

What to watch out for

It hits newcomers hardest

People who know the island manage without a map. New players do not. An off belongs clearly in the server description.

Not a substitute for visibility limits

The map does not show other players. To stop people finding each other, look elsewhere.
