What does this setting do?

The BCU is the monitoring device every prisoner carries. Among other things, the readouts about your own condition and surroundings run through it. This switch keeps the built-in lock in force that stops those readouts being available anywhere at any time. It is on by default.

The lock is part of the premise: the prisoner is monitored, not equipped. It makes the display unavailable in certain situations – and that is exactly what makes certain places dangerous rather than merely inconvenient.

Turning it off gives a more comfortable game in which the readouts are always there. That removes some of the tension and is usually chosen by servers keeping the survival share small and the building share large.

To declutter the screen in general, the switches for life indicators and the quick access bar serve you better – they act more visibly and without side effects on the game systems.

What to watch out for

Not the switch for the on-screen display

To hide life indicators or the quick access bar, there are separate settings for that.
