What does this setting do?

By default every new character starts in the air and floats down by parachute. This switch changes that: the player then appears directly on the ground.

The parachute start has a purpose you only notice once it is gone. From the air you can see where you are landing, recognise roads and settlements, and steer a little on the way down. Someone appearing on the ground stands in a bush with no warning and has no idea which way to go.

In exchange, the ground start is faster and less conspicuous. A parachute is visible from far away and tells everyone nearby that someone has just arrived – on PvP servers that is an invitation. Which is exactly why many PvP servers choose this switch.

It only affects the start of a fresh character, not later respawns via sector, shelter or squad. Those have rules of their own.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

Off (parachute). New players are handed an overview.

Classic PvP

On (ground). A parachute is a signal flare.

Hardcore

On (ground). Orientation is the player's job.

What to watch out for

It takes orientation away from new players

The view from the air is the only overview a fresh character is given. Without a map and without a parachute, starting out gets hard.

It does not apply to respawns

Sector, shelter and squad have their own rules. This switch only concerns the start of a new character.
