What does this setting do?

Chests can be dropped where building is not allowed – inside a bunker, on military ground, in a trader zone. That is intentional, because looting needs space. They are not meant to stay there permanently, though, and this value sets the deadline: two hours by default.

The point is to prevent depots in restricted zones. Without this deadline bunkers and military areas would become outposts, because nobody may raid there and chests do not decay. Two hours is enough for sorting, not for living.

Important in daily use: when the deadline passes, the chest disappears with its contents. There is no in-game warning and no recovery. If you shorten this value, announce it, or players will lose backpacks full of gear one after another.

The format is hours:minutes:seconds. 00:30:00 is half an hour, 04:00:00 is four hours.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

04:00:00. Enough time for an extended bunker run.

Classic PvP

02:00:00 (default).

Hardcore

00:30:00. If you loot, take what you can carry.

What to watch out for

The contents go with it

The chest is removed along with the gear inside, without warning. Always announce changes to this value.

Restricted zones only

Outside no-build areas chests keep their normal decay time. To limit chests in general, look at decay instead.
