What does this setting do?

This value sets how many flags a single player may own. It ships as 10, which surprises many people.

It only applies when multiple flags are explicitly allowed. While that switch is off you stay at one flag no matter what is written here. That dependency is what makes the default of 10 so treacherous: it looks harmless as long as you leave the other switch alone – and goes live the very second you do not.

Ten flags are too many for practically any server. Ten flags per player means up to five hundred protected areas on an island of some fifteen square kilometres once fifty players are active. Long before that point, nobody finds a building spot any more.

Two to three is the number most building servers do well with: enough for a house, a workshop and an outpost, few enough to keep the map open.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

2 to 3. Covers the usual wishes without carving up the map.

Classic PvP

1 – better to leave multiple flags off entirely.

Hardcore

1. One base, one risk.

What to watch out for

The default of 10 is a trap

It is already there before you allow multiple flags. Flip that switch and forget this value and you have instantly permitted ten bases per player.

Lowering it removes no flags

Existing flags stay even if a player now has too many. Only new ones are blocked. Cleaning up takes manual work.

It multiplies build volume

Every extra flag brings extra elements with it. Never set this value without a look at the elements per additional flag.
