What does this setting do?

This switch decides whether a message appears when one player kills another. Mind the direction: it is called Hide, so on means the message is hidden. It ships as on, so there are no notifications.

That is a good thing, and the reason is tactical. A kill notification reveals that a fight took place, roughly where, and that loot is now lying there. On a PvP server it therefore steers half the population to the same spot, which helps nobody involved.

Turning it off – making notifications visible – mainly makes sense on small servers with a settled community, where the message is more a conversation starter than a target marker.

If you need an overview of fights, the log files serve you better than an on-screen message: they show more and reveal nothing.

Which value suits my server?

Relaxed PvE

On (hidden). There is nothing to celebrate.

Classic PvP

On (hidden). Notifications give away location and loot.

Hardcore

On (hidden). Whoever wants to know what happened goes there.

What to watch out for

The switch is worded negatively

True hides, False shows. Read it as “allow notifications” and you set the exact opposite.
